The Orange County Sustainability Decathlon challenges university teams to design and build model solar-powered homes that address climate change and California’s housing needs. OCSD teams will showcase innovative, market-ready model homes to display in a sustainable village that will be open to the public.

October 5-8 and 12-15, 2023
The OCSD is a new collegiate competition focused on sustainability. Fourteen teams, many from California, have spent the last two years designing and constructing sustainable, ultra-efficient homes that represent the transition to renewable energy. These houses will be on display in a sustainable village for visitors to tour.

Admission
OCSD admission is FREE and parking is offered at the fairgrounds for $12 per car. Save and go green by OC Bus, powered by renewable energy and part of OCTA’S commitment to a balanced, equitable, and sustainable transportation network.
Food and beverages are available for purchase in the village and beer gardens.

Education Day is a unique educational opportunity for K-12 students to learn about the environmental challenges we face and how living more sustainably can help combat climate change.We’re excited to welcome the next generation of sustainability advocates to the OC Fair & Event Center on October 6, 2023!

The OCSD Career and College Fair is an opportunity for jobseekers and prospective students to explore sustainability-related jobs and academic programs recruiting talented and passionate people to join their efforts in the fight against climate change.
Bring your resume and business cards when you connect and network with industry leaders and other like-minded individuals on October 13, 2023!
Additional Activities to Explore at OCSD 2023
We’ve partnered with the Wyland Foundation to bring in their mobile exhibit about marine life in California. The Wyland Mobile Science Lab will be on-site during all eight public exhibit days.
We’re excited to introduce our special guest, Adam the Falconer, to the stage for a presentation about California’s natural habitat, the importance of not using pesticides, and educating the public on our local bird population! Our falcon expert will be on site for Education Day and both weekends during OCSD.
The fire departments in Orange County are committed to fighting fires, saving lives, and reducing their carbon footprints. We have one of the fire departments here to showcase drones that prevent and combat wildfires.
The Child Creativity Lab joins OCSD to educate children on the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling. We will have home-building kits for kids using reusable materials. They’ll be there for all 8 days!
We have the US Army on-site for a robotics demonstration used for disaster relief efforts, solar panels used in the field (remote areas), STEM-related activities, and careers in the US Army.
The USGBC-LA partners with OCSD to provide STEM Kits for teachers/faculty. There will also be an opportunity to book a workshop at each school.
Sustainable living impacts wildlife too! The Pacific Marine Mammal Center rescues and rehabilitates marine life and advances ocean conservation through their work. They will have workshops at OCSD on pollution and animal rescue along Southern California.
One of the best ways to live more sustainably is to grow a green thumb! Tower Garden helps you get started with supplies for growing plants at home. They will lead a discussion on decreasing your carbon footprint and host a workshop on growing plants at home with 10% water use of traditional gardens.
If you love the outdoors and hiking, you won’t want to miss Leave No Trace, the organization that teaches you how to protect nature. They’re at OCSD to lead a discussion on how to be a responsible trail hiker in Southern California.
The Department of Education will present a documentary on the Dream Big project, which provides academic support to the youth in underserved communities. There will also be a mini design-and-build competition, inspired by our main event, for pre-selected middle school students in the OC Promenade!
Spyder Lab is a school program that inspires the next generation of entrepreneurs looking to start their own businesses. They will feature a high school exhibit that showcases 3D printing from new reusable and sustainable filament. The team also created the trophies for our Decathlon from an original design by one of their students!
