ORANGE COUNTY SUSTAINABILITY DECATHLON ANNOUNCES STEAM STUDENT SHOWCASE

Local High School and College Students Have the Opportunity to Exhibit Their Passion for Sustainability at a Major Public Event in Fall 2023

Organizers of the 2023 Orange County Sustainability Decathlon (OCSD23) residential design-build competition announced today that the “World’s Fair of Sustainability” will feature a new component: the STEAM Student Showcase. (STEAM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics.) The Showcase provides an opportunity for high school and college students to create sustainability-themed structures and exhibits that compliment the OCSD23 houses and enhance the visitor experience. The event will take place October 5-15, 2023, at the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa, Calif.

The STEAM Student Showcase aims to inspire a new generation of Californians to reimagine sustainability solutions. This is an opportunity for students to display their work at a major public event that tens of thousands will attend.

Full applications are due March 29, 2023. Funding and grant opportunities are available.

Young people are the most outspoken advocates for fighting climate change,” said OCSD23 President and CEO Fred Smoller. This is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to fighting climate change with innovative and creative exhibits.

Smoller added, “We also hope the Showcase encourages students to build houses for future Sustainability Decathlons and to help us make Orange County the sustainability capital of the world.

State Sen. Dave Min (SD-37) championed a large grant from the State of California to fund the OCSD23.

The STEAM Student Showcase will complement the OCSD23 competition, which is for schools of architecture and engineering. The competition challenges multidisciplinary teams to design, build, and showcase innovative, sustainable residential buildings.
